Foreign Minister Baerbock on the decision of the budget committee of the German Bundestag on further support for Ukraine
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock issued the following statement today (21 March) on the decision of the budget committee of the German Bundestag on further support for Ukraine:
The budget committee of the German Bundestag has today approved an additional almost three billion euro for short-term support to Ukraine. The fact that the additional funds required by Ukraine to maintain its defence capability have now been released is good news.
It was a long time in coming, but we have finally managed to break the deadlock. And not before time since the military situation has become increasingly difficult for Ukraine in recent months. The country urgently needs more anti-aircraft missiles, artillery ammunition, spare parts and weapons systems in order to continue to be able to withstand Russia’s aggression, which is in violation of international law. It is therefore all the more important that we are able to contribute around seven billion euro again in 2025 for military support for the country. In addition, commitment appropriations totalling 8.25 billion euro have been made, which we can use to commission further military support for Ukraine up until 2029. This is a major step forward and also gives Ukraine planning security. You can rely on Germany!
We are taking the lead at the European level and showing that we will continue to stand firmly by the side of the people in Ukraine also in the future. We are counting on our European partners to now also work to mobilise further funds to support Ukraine.
The massive attacks on Odesa and other places in Ukraine underscore the fact that Putin is continuing to try to create facts on the ground on the battlefield. By increasing our financial contribution, we are sending a clear signal to Russia, especially at this critical stage, that we remain firmly committed to supporting a sovereign and democratic Ukraine that is capable of defending itself. This will strengthen Ukraine’s position in talks on a lasting peace.
Since Moldova is also severely affected by the impact of Russia’s war of aggression, it is all the more important that the motion also provides for further funds to support the Moldovan security forces.
