Federal Foreign Office on the deportation of a number of Uyghurs from Thailand to China
Today (27 February) a Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement on the deportation of a number of Uyghurs from Thailand to China:
The Federal Government condemns the decision of the Thai Government to deport a number of Uyghurs to China.
The deportation violates the principle of non-refoulement that is enshrined in international law prohibiting states from returning individuals to a country where they are at risk of suffering serious human rights violations.
We call upon the Chinese Government to respect and protect the rights of those deported and their families. We call upon the Thai Government to assess the situation of the deportees on the ground in China and to work to ensure they are protected.
