Welcome
Minister of State Katja Keul prior to her trip to Algeria
Minister of State Katja Keul issued the following statement today (25 January 2025) ahead of her visit to Algeria:
Algeria is a key player when it comes to resolving regional issues and conflicts in North and West Africa. Due to its geographical location, it is particularly affected by the political and security situation in the Sahel. I therefore believe it is important that we step up the political dialogue between Germany and Algeria on regional security and that we understand the position and perspectives on the ground.
Furthermore, a key appointment during my trip will be the official opening of the National Public Museum of Cherchell. The German Archaeological Institute, the Musée Public National de Cherchell and the Algerian Ministry of Culture have been working together intensively for many years on the restoration and re‑organisation of the museum’s collection. To me, this cooperation is a particularly impressive example of our vibrant cultural relations, which we want to place on an even broader footing.
Another thing which is especially important to me is the exchange with Algerian civil society, particularly with young people. That is why I will be visiting the University of Algiers 2 and will be having a discussion with students of German there.
Background information:
Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Katja Keul will be in Algeria from 25 to 27 January. While in the country, she will have political talks with high-ranking representatives of the Government, culture professionals as well as members of civil society. The talks will focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding cooperation in the sphere of regional security and stability as well as intensifying cultural exchange.
The demand for German language courses is growing steadily in Algeria. After the trip, representatives of the two countries will sign a joint declaration on accepting more Algerian schools into Germany’s global network of partner schools.
During her visit, the Minister of State will open the National Public Museum of Cherchell together with Algeria’s Minister of Culture Ballalou. The museum’s collections were researched, restored and re‑organised during many years of intensive cooperation between the German Archaeological Institute and various Algerian institutions.
